Scrapheap Challange part 2 - Introducing Mr Freezer!

This morning I opened the tub with the shed in it that had been coated in Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner to be greeted by this.

Airfix Coal Office,

Mr Muscle had certainly been flexing his muscles overnight whilst I was in the land of nod! Cleaned up under the tap this was what I was left with. A record of my complete ineptitude years ago putting models together. Tube glue daubed over parts twisted off the sprue - this is a real glue bomb model!

Airfix Coal Office,

The next thing I wanted to do was separate it into its kit components. Tube glue is not the most controllable glue to apply, especially in young inexperienced hands, but it does tend to stick parts together well. However, being as old as I am , you do come across some tricks and in this case it was to put the model in the freezer! Here it is in the company of some ice cream - in best Homer Simpson voice - Hmmmmm! Ice cream - and some burgers - Hmmmmm! Burgers!

Airfix Coal Office,

I have no idea of the science but the joints are weakened and it is possible with care to separate them - usually! It did work in this case but I forgot I had left the model in Mr Freezer so Mrs. Woody had a bit of a shock when she came to get the roast potatoes out for lunch! Try explaining the science you have no idea about requires you to put models in the freezer!

Anyway it was a great lunch provided by Mrs. W. Following its introduction to Mr Freezer and with a pit of persuasion the model was in component parts . Some of the pre-existing damage was to the door frame. As the kit door was missing and I would have to make one I just widened the door opening by cutting the necessary plastic away as the photo below shows part way through the job.

Airfix Coal Office,

Having glued the sides together and reversing the window frames so they now fit in from the back rather than how Airfix intended (you can see the difference this makes from the photos above compared to the one below) from the front and having made a new door I am now at this stage.

Airfix Coal Office,

I now just need to add a new roof and some gutters, fill those holes in the front and back and then paint. If it does not work out then I can always go back to the kitchen and introduce it to Mr Blender!

Scrapheap Challenge!

These are a couple of boxes of junk items that may come in useful someday although Mrs. Woody strongly argues that point!

Scrapbox

Most modellers have at least one such box where broken or surplus bits that really should have been thrown out years ago rest in peace awaiting a possible useful fate.

I need a small hut or two for my 009 gauge layout. I do have a kit from Wills and it looks good for the job.

Wills Lamp Hut SS22

However I did have a search through the boxes of  bits and found this.

Airfix Coal Office

It is an old Airfix coal office kit and it was made by me when my age had but a single digit! Enough said of that! It does reflect my crude abilities at the time and is painted, or should I say plastered, in gloss brown enamel paint. It is missing part of the roof, the door and drain pipes but such things are not going to stop me seeing if I can resurrect this building although it will be a bit like Scrapheap Challenge.
First and most essential stage is to try to get the paint off it so it was put in an old ice cream container and soaked in Mr. Muscle oven cleaner and the lid put on. I will see what it looks like tomorrow.

Move that box!

Not an instruction from Mrs. Woody to tidy up my junk may come in handy someday items but a passing visit through the village of Lowdham in Nottinghamshire. Lowdham does have a railway station which is served by the Nottingham to Lincoln line.

Although a small station it does have some history including an incident in 1953 when a train blocked the level crossing for 1 hour and 45 minutes as the driver and fireman had 'words'! The Lowdaham bypass for road traffic was something which came much later so the incident did cause a lot of problems for passengers and highway users. Luckily no such incident took place on my visit as this class 170 Diesel Multiple Unit stopped on its journey to Lincoln.

Lowdham Station does have another distinction. Following a major resignalling programme the signal box at Lowdham, which was located on the other side of the road to the station, became redundant in 2016. A fate like this usually results in demolition but in this case a local group of enthusiasts managed to do what ever necessary to be able with volunteers to dismantle the box and move it across to its new site on the platform of the station and the work was completed in 2020.

It is now a museum where you can experience what it was like to operate a signal box as all the levers are in place along with other railway related relics. Information on opening times are located here. Why not have a look a that moved box this year!

Two Shed Fred!

009 gauge layout

The 009 narrow gauge layout has taken a few steps further forward with much of the canal wharf coming together. All the inset paving is finished and following a coat of Halfords grey primer it was given a wash of my favorite dilute black wash to bring some relief to them.

009 gauge layout

Once complete they and the walls to the wharf were all glued in place.. The two sheds were put back and my sign making skills tested with a sign for what I am terming as Two Shed Fred Trading! Although it all requires detailing the basics are there and I even put some crates and barrels in place temporarily together with a wagon on the wharf just to see how things look. What is in the crates and what exactly Two Shed Fred trades in is a mystery although rumours abound that the company is a staging post for Mrs. Woody's numerous internet orders! I will probably pay for that postulation - literally - so lets just look at the photos!

Electrical spaghetti!

I had a bit of a quiet day today - but don't tell Mrs. Woody! A bike ride this morning followed by sowing some seeds for bedding plants taking less time then I thought (as I had run out of potting compost!) meant there was a little bit of extra time for some modelling. There are certain jobs that you put off because you need to tackle them in one go and take more time then you usually have available. One of those jobs was to separate the two baseboards of my 009 narrow gauge layout (they are designed to be split) to undertake some jobs on the wiring. One of those was to find out why one of the sidings was not getting an electrical supply. That actually worked out well as it was only a disconnected wire. The next job was to sort out the electrical spaghetti of wiring under the board. I am no electrician so wires go everywhere although after years of dealing with trying to trace wiring faults on my electrical installations I do at least try to use consistent coloured wires for circuits. What I was facing was this.

009 gauge layout

I saw these electrical connectors which seemed a good idea some time ago so had one in stock. It allows you to connect multiple wires serving the same circuit into individual connections which are in turn connected together by the connector block.

009 gauge layout

It makes life a lot easier rather than having to twist several wires together and stuffing them into a single connector board. Hopefully it should also be a lot more reliable and it no longer looks like spaghetti!

009 gauge layout

A bit of work on the canal wharf has also taken place with the water, wharf walls and coping stones glued together and the various cobbled parts fettled to fit around the tracks. These are cut from a sheet of embossed plastic sheet. I just need to finish the last piece to run between the long siding and then it can all be glued in place.

Now what to make for dinner - Spaghetti meatballs perhaps!

Not long now!

Not long now until the Rocks by Rail Museum opens for the 2022 season. In fact a week today, Tuesday 12th April, the gates will open to the public at 10am. You can click on the images below to open an image you can enlarge to see more clearly if you need to.

Rocks by Rail Museum

Lots of events and where else can you drive a railway locomotive for £5?. Bargain especially in this day of rising prices. Even on non-operating days there are many things to see and do and for a family of two adults and up to three children £15 on non-operating days and £25 on operating days is all it costs to access the museum. OK! Sales pitch over.

Rocks by Rail Museum
It will be great to see visitors again after what has been a hard Winter of ballast washing and track leveling and packing for me and others. We are almost at the end of the line so it was nice not to have to walk to the work site and instead get a lift in Betty the Sentinel locomotive.

My taxi awaits!

Its a long way to the end!

Nearly there!

That was the easy part so now the work starts!

Cost of living pressures - Bargain basement time!

With a lot of talk at the moment about the cost of living rising there is no doubt that model railways can be expensive. Some of the recent released model locomotives can easily be in the region of £150 to £250. For that you do get a very well detailed model that is almost, what is termed as museum quality. Unless you are a highly skilled modeller it is unlikely that you will get anything better. However that is a lot of money in most peoples terms. Add to that a train for it to haul and even if you only have room for three coaches it is likely to add another £100 to £120. A six coach train can easily add up to £250 to £300.

Here at WMD we need to be cautious in purchases with the watchful budgetary eye of Mrs. Woody keeping monetary matters in hand. So I do keep a look out for bargains. One example is that I have slowly been building up a collection of British Rail Blue era coaches as I have a few diesels from that era of the 1970s into the early 80s. I do have room for six coach trains on my layout so I was pleased that over the past few months I have managed to put together a rake of 6 Mk2 coaches for just over £40! Three were bought via eBay for about £25 including postage and three at last weekends Bingham Model Railway Club exhibition for £6 each from the club sales stand. What I have will never be classed as a Museum Quality Model. They do, under close scrutiny, show their age, wear and lack of detail finesse. But that is the thing. Under close scrutiny. On most layouts, including mine, they will be wizzing by at speed (hopefully!) so the chance to closely examine whether the electric generator has the proper belt modelled in the correct place or that the toilet window is located slightly to one side of where it should be is somewhat superfluous. There is an old saying - If it looks OK from 6 feet which is the normal viewing distance for layouts, then it is OK!

They do require a bit of a clean and fettling and perhaps one or two wheels require replacing but overall just over £40 works for me - and hopefully Mrs. W!

It is very nice to have the latest detailed models and I do have some myself, but don't write off old models. Most will give years more service and still look good from that 6 foot distance! Keep an eye open for those bargains and railway modelling can be a reasonably cheap hobby.

What makes a great layout?

Following my visit to the Bingham Model Railway Club Exhibition on Saturday my mind was centered on one layout in particular. That is Cold Front, a WW1 themed 009 gauge layout. There were several factors in my mind that made it a great layout in my view and others as it won best layout at the show. Firstly was the choice of subject. In the period 2014 to 2018 there were a few WW1 themed layouts built and exhibited but they were and are a rarity. So, the subject is unusual but following the interest in WW1 as a result of the commemoration of the 100 year anniversary people are aware and interested in the subject regardless of being railway modellers or not or even being Mrs. Woody! Secondly, the presentation was first class. The layout was built on a curved baseboard and enclosed so your eye was drawn into the layout. The enclosure was well presented and it was almost like looking at a stage. Thirdly the composition of the layout was well thought out. The landscape of the layout rose towards the back making it easy to see the details and the details were well modelled. Fourthly, the trains operated well without the need for 'The Hand of God' pushing stalled engines. They were also interesting with rolling stock that would have been used in the period. Fifthly, the actual modelling was first class. Everything was modelled to a consistent high quality. Lastly, there was the surprise atmosphere created by the lighting mimicked day and night with the lighting fading to night time and then back to day through the use of clever electronics and LED lighting units.

Well that is what in my view makes a great layout. Unfortunately with my skills and abilities I will never build that type of layout - but it doesn't stop me trying and enjoying the process!

I will end with some pictures of this great layout.

Bingham Model Railway Club Exhibition.

Something of a rarity in the last few years but nice to see that model railway exhibitions are beginning to come back. The issue of Covid is still here but being triple jabbed and still wearing a mask and sanitising on a regular basis you get to the stage where you feel comfortable in places which is something we all probably would not have been two years ago.

So with Mrs. Woody in tow to keep an eye on the spending we headed off to the exhibition this afternoon. The show is one of the smaller ones but in a spacious place so there is plenty of space to get about without falling over people and there were plenty of layouts, demonstrations and trade stands to keep you entertained and your wallet under strain! The layouts were a good spread of gauges from n to 0, eras and UK continental and American themed layouts were all present so a good variety with something to please and interest everyone - even Mrs. Woody was impressed! Her particular favorite was this 009 narrow gauge WW1 themed layout Cold Front. I must admit it was mine too!

Doing it again!

Today, being April Fools' Day, was a day to repeat some modelling that I had already done as I had foolishly got things wrong previously. On the model Scania 143H, despite successfully rescuing the main cab without the need to respray it following the decal issue, I had to respray the side spoilers and make some new brackets for them which also got painted. Whilst the spray can was out, the mirrors also got a final coat of paint. It could all have been worse! In addition I had to put the windscreen and door windows back in as they had come out. Again matters could have been worse but it is a bit frustrating having to do it all again - almost making me feel foolish - April Foolish maybe? No matter, lessons learnt, do it differently next time and the next model will be better are all thoughts that go through my mind at a time like this. It is always best to look positively when something goes wrong as I keep telling Mrs. Woody following me failing on one of her jobs on her ever expanding list of jobs for me to do!
